About Lord Maha Mrityunjaya
About Lord Maha Mrityunjaya
Lord Maha Mrityunjaya — the 'Great Conqueror of Death' — is the most compassionate and healing form of Lord Shiva. He is depicted with three eyes representing the sun, moon and fire, and eight arms bearing sacred attributes including a rudraksha mala, a kamandalu of amrita (the nectar of immortality), and gestures of blessing. Seated upon a tiger-skin in deep meditation, He radiates serenity, strength and infinite grace.
His sacred Mrityunjaya mantra, revealed in the Rig Veda by Sage Vasishtha, was bestowed by Lord Shiva upon Sage Markandeya — a young boy destined to die at sixteen. Through unwavering devotion and chanting of this mantra, Markandeya was saved from Yama, the lord of death, and granted eternal youth. Since that day the Mrityunjaya mantra has been revered as the supreme healing mantra of Sanatana Dharma.
Devotees who worship Lord Maha Mrityunjaya with faith are blessed with longevity (ayushya), robust health, freedom from disease and accidents, removal of graha-doshas, fearlessness, mental peace, and ultimately moksha — liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
